According to a recent study published in the June issue of The Journal of the American Dental Association, essential dental treatments are safe for
pregnant women in their 13th -21st weeks of
pregnancy. The study was specifically looking at the safety of deep cleaning and treatment of moderate-to-severe or fractured or abscessed teeth during pregnancy. 823 women were studied for adverse conditions from the treatments and the study concluded that the treatments did not increase pregnancy risks. The study did not cover the use of dental X-rays or placement or removal or mercury fillings while pregnant, both of which should not be done at any stage of pregnancy. Oral
health is particularly important during pregnancy however, so the results of the study should put your mind at ease if you need a visit to the dentist during your special time.
