Music to Your Baby’s Ears
If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to the Natural Pregnancy RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!
Have you ever watched parents who place earphones on their
pregnant belly to try to increase their babies IQ with a little Mozart? While that may be a stretch, the type of
music your baby hears while you are pregnant will have an impact on his or her overall
health. Check out this article about
music to avoid while pregnant over at the Weeks of
Pregnancy blog to learn how loud, jarring noises during pregnancy have been shown to cause premature births and
birth defects. You care about the music you listen to, why wouldn’t your baby also respond poorly to noise
pollution?

We are nearly at 12 weeks, I think the baby has ears now, so maybe we will have to stop listening to rock music stations for the next 6 months and start on the easy listening stuff. Food for thought anyway
@Simon@free vector art:
If you like rock music then you can go ahead and listen throughout pregnancy especially if you are going to listen after the baby is born anyway. Just skip watching airplanes land, rock concerts, rap music and crazy, knock down drag out fights with your spouse.
I’m 20 weeks pregnant. I listen to country music, and I know that’s really positive stuff. My brother lives with me and listens to rap and hard rock occasionally, especially in the car. I’m concerned about how the feelings of those types of music can affect the baby. Especially since he tends to put the music at a louder volume.
@Autumn:
Thanks for writing Autumn. Unless you are listening to that music on a daily basis, I am sure that your positive influence can offset any disturbing sounds to your fetus. Try to avoid it or ask him to turn it down (or wear earphones) if you want to play it safe.
I am thinking of playin gmusic for my baby, I am 25 weeks pregant, what it the best way of doing this
@Kim Lincoln:
You do not need special headphones although you can use those if you like. Your baby can hear muffled sounds that are in the room with you. Simply play pleasant music throughout the day.
I’m 17 and 16 weeks pregnant, and I play the synthesizer.
So I’m into bass boosting electronica and techno music.
I’m not sure how this would effect the brain structure of the baby since it isn’t exactly disturbing music.
@melinda:
Music is more powerful than many of us realize. I don’t find techno disturbing either but if you are concerned you could keep the volume down during pregnancy or infancy to play it safe.
I have also found that what you play during pregnancy will appeal to your baby after they are born so make sure to play music you enjoy as well.
