Stretch Mark Remedies and Prevention

While many experts claim that stretch marks are genetic and unavoidable, others swear by their raw, vegan diet or their natural remedies and have an unblemished stomach post-pregnancy to prove it.

By: Maia Pells

Nobody wants to go through life marred with permanent stretch marks and scars as a result of pregnancy. They also do not want to go through the painful surgical process of getting rid of stretch marks. For most people, prevention and home remedies are the best alternative.

Vitamin E
Many people will attest that applying Vitamin E on stretch marks scars is the best stretch mark remedy and prevention. All you have to do is to buy Vitamin E caplets, cut them open and apply the solution on the affected area of stretch mark. Although the method of application is somewhat questionable, it is a known fact that the Vitamin E called Alpha Tocopherol is an antioxidant needed to regenerate the skin and improve skin elasticity by promoting the growth of cells to replace scars.

Although caplets may be somewhat effective, Vitamin E in a natural skin care solution may prove to be a better alternative to a home remedy for stretch marks. This is because other ingredients such as Squalene enhance the effects of Vitamin E. Squalene oil in particular is a natural antioxidant that also promotes skin regeneration.

Vitamin E and Aloe Vera
Aloe Vera leaves can be mixed with ordinary, over-the-counter Vitamin E caplets to promote skin regeneration and rejuvenation. As a base, olive oil may also be used with the mixture to allow smoother and easier application on affected areas. If you are not sure as to the amount of ingredients that should be added in this home remedy for stretch marks, you can always opt to buy a natural cream that both contains Aloe Vera and Vitamin E. These are available in skin care shops.

Adequate Water
The simplest and least expensive home remedy for stretch marks is to drink plenty of water. Water is the most natural form of body hydration that can keep skin cells elastic and internally moisturized. This might mean that you may have to deal with a bloated tummy and frequent trips to the ladies room. Not everyone can stand more than eight glasses of water a day. Drinking more can make anyone feel a little queasy especially when not naturally thirsty.

Try to avoid packaged remedies for stretch marks. Many are loaded with dangerous chemicals that you should not put on your body when you are not pregnant, but it is even worse to apply it directly to your pregnant abdomen! Check out our review of personal care products that are safe for pregnancy.

Cut Nails and Apply Oil
Since pregnant women are likely to experience itchiness due to their expanding stomach skin, pregnant women are advised to cut short their nails to discourage scratching. Scratching will only worsen an already existing stretch mark condition since it tears at the dermis. A good remedy for the itch would be to apply a body oil and to gently rub the area with a cloth to relieve itching.

Some Reminders
Natural home treatment for stretch marks is almost always a better alternative than drugstore-bought chemical solutions especially for pregnant women. In order to be safe, though, always consult your doctor before you start using a home remedy for stretch marks especially when pregnant.

A natural home remedy for stretch marks would also be best applied after a warm shower while the pores are more receptive. Simply apply your home remedy for stretch marks generously on the affected area and let the solution sink into the skin.

Sheryl’s comment

Do what you can to prevent stretch marks but please do not stress overly much about it. Your genetics are already in place and you cannot change the other variables, such as how many babies you are carrying. Do the best you can with a healthy diet, tons of water and regular exercise for circulation and then focus on what is clearly more important than cosmetics – your baby.

  1. Hi ,

I always had pretty bad stretch marks and red scars around my belly region and abdomen ever since I gave birth to my three kids.I had tried Vitamin E oil and cocoa butter which a number of people had recommended but it didn’t seem to work. My Doctor had even suggested a Tummy Tuck. I then recently read an article about a lady who supposedly got rid of her stretch marks using a particular cream. I tried it and it worked really well. Within 4 weeks my stretch marks were very much faded and they soon disappeared You can read more about the lady’s article at the link below.

  2. Some stretch mark creams do work pretty well at helping prevent stretch marks. They are also capable of diminishing their appearance too after developing them.

  4. This is actually a wonderful article to prevent stretch marks. I think drinking plenty of water as well as cocoa butter or opening up vitamin c gel capsules and gently massage them on the effected area.

  5. I was obsessed with the Made from Earth Aloe & JOJOBA CREME THERAPY I was pregnant! I started using it around 3 months and kept with it everyday until my son was born (and a bit beyond). Its 100% chemical free with no fragrance, is made from wonderful ingredients, feels amazing on your skin, and best of all…no stretch marks!

I thought I would be prone to them, since I have others on my hips and thighs from teenage years, but not a one appeared during pregnancy. It is a bit pricey, but a little goes a long way. I applied very liberally, 1-2 times a day and used almost 4 bottles during my whole pregancy.

Very well worth it if you are looking to avoid stretch marks, and if you are a healthy mom who refuses to use chemicals in your skincare products…

  6. I remember through my wife second pregnancy she had real dark stretch marks. We tried everything to get rid of them. I think vitamin E tablets work the best. She also use cocoa butter daily. In fact she still uses it to prevent future stretch marks.

  7. I’m generally not a lotion person – it just seems like too much work.

In my second pregnancy I’ve had some really itchy skin on my belly and breasts and my mother bought me the Made from Earth Aloe & Jojoba Creme Therapy (as posted by MT above) for me to try. It has eliminated my itchy skin (though it returns the next day if I don’t use the lotion).

My stretch marks seem to be lighter, but I suppose that’s probably due to the fact that they’re more moisturized than usual.

The scent is pleasant and the texture is wonderful. It’s not greasy or overwhelming in any way, but it is nice and thick. I’m someone who struggles with the decision to buy a $4 bottle of Curel, but I’ll absolutely pay $25 for a tube of the Made from Earth Aloe Therapy.

  8. I had read some good things about the Made from Earth Aloe Jojoba Creme Therapy and it’s ability to smooth out older stretch marks and cellulite. I was skeptical yet hopeful and I can say that after three weeks of applying only once a day, this has in fact smoothed out and drastically reduced the appearance of the stretch marks on my legs.

I’ve been using this product for about a month now and I noticed a difference in the smoothness or texture of the stretch marks on my arms too. I read the many reviews about this product and heard good things. I don’t expect the marks to disappear completely, but there definitely is a SIGNIFICANT difference. All I can say is I will be buying this product again. Its way worth the money for only $30 a bottle.

I am going to now try the Made from Earth Aloe Skin Treatment which is designed for the face and can help with wrinkles. I highly recommend the Aloe Jojoba Creme Therapy (from Made from Earth skincare) for those ladies who are looking to reduce cellulite or stretch marks. Use for 1-2 months. You will see perm results.

  10. Stretch marks are one of the top five causes of insecurity for women. Known medically as striae, stretch marks are a type of scarring in the skin that is clearly as off-color bands, stripes, or lines.

  11. I began using the Dr Max Powers “Stretch Mark Treatment” every single day about two months ago and it works WONDERS. First you can use it for stretch marks and you can use it for scars and to moisturize your face and neck, ladies!

You must follow the instructions even though they are pretty simple. If I am using this for acne scars, skin discolorations (sun exposure), uneven skin tone I apply either over makeup (may not be recommended as this could remove your makeup)and on a freshly washed face.

I use the lengths of my fingers not fingertips since they produce the oils that could cause you breakouts from YES touching your face. I rub into the affected area or scar (even works on cystic acne scars) atleast two to three times a day when I am able to. But if not I do this at night before going to bed. Be patient and wait one to two weeks before you notice a big difference as the scar gets lighter your face appears to be glowing and skin discolorations slowly fade.

Keep on it atleast everyday. I thought it was only for men who workout – based on the way the product looks, but I am glad I bought this and one bottle lasted me over two months and I used it everyday! Give this product a try, be patient, follow the directions and you will not be disappointed.

  12. Cocoa butter and shea butter are the best in my opinion. I don’t think Vitamin E works very well.

  13. This is a very helpful post. My wife and I are “working on” becoming parents for the first time, and she has been stressing A LOT about the prospect of stretch marks. Both of us are fans of homeopathic and natural treatments, so these suggestions will be right up her alley.

    Thanks for the information.

  16. Because many more consumers are searching methods round conventional cosmetic surgery, and rather deciding to go with securer, alternate paths that are backed up on scientific prove that they’ll indeed provide the wanted results that consumers is looking for, permitting more low-cost options to cosmetic surgery
